Image result for Resistance
The Law of Attraction states that things that are alike are drawn to each other. Logically, if your thoughts are of a negative nature, and since thought is what preceedes our experiences, the result will be that negative experiences will dominate our reality. Simple, isn´t it?
So the question would be, why on earth the Law of Attraction doesn´t work with me if I´m always trying to be positive? The answer could be encaptuled in a simple word: ´but´.

Let me give you an example, lets say that someone decides to use the Law of Attraction to get a home by the beach. His salary is very far away from even attempting a home improvement or renovation of furniture in his own home, however, this man uses the ´faith´needed to attract what he wants. His faith is strong and he keeps repeating positive affirmations and collecting pictures of his ideal home by the beach. However, everytime he gets his paycheck his stomach churns and gets a feeling of defeat that is very difficult to shake off. Yes, he desires a home by the beach, BUT his salary tells him that it´s almost impossible to achieve. That BUT is what we refer to as resistance. Everytime he thinks about his dream home he gets a bad feeling, like he will never be able to achieve something like that.

This is where CBT (Cognitive Behavioural Therapy) plays a very important part in our feeling better, being healthier and stopping our resistance. You convert a psychotic demand for your ideal home into a healthy wish. You would very much like to acquire your desired home by the beach, but you understand that if that doesn´t happen it´s not the end of the world. Your needs are still being met everyday and you can still lead a happy and fulfilling life withour that house. Negative feelings recede giving way to a sense of relief, or might be entirely gone if you practice living with these new thoughts. You start to enjoy what you already have, and are grateful for it. You realise that you don´t need much to create a happy life with your current circumstances. You find joy in living simply.

Once you feel a bit less resistant, then you can look at your posibilities realistically and make a plan to attract your house by the beach accordingly if you still want it. This is when ´faith,´or living ´as if´comes into play. Also, you take realistic steps towards your dream with the help of your plan. Do you need to earn more but are in a dead end job? Do you need to improve your skills or qualifications? Perhaps you could do a course online if you couldn´t physically go back college. If you pay attention to life and its signs, you will see the Universe will start giving you hints about what is the logical next step to take in order to achieve your dream. Suddently you will attract people and circumstances that will help you in your endeavour. All of the sudden, life becomes almost magical.

Lets have a look at the very important points to work towards and attract your dream:

Think about your desire. Are your current circumstances supporting the possibility of having your wish met at the moment? If the answer is ´no´ and you start feeling bad or restistant look at sencond point.
Instead of feeling discouraged and resistant towards the realization of your dream, think healthily, what you need is not a psycotic demand to the Universe, instead, make a healthy wish, that if never ever came to pass, would hardly mean the end of the world.
Now that your looking at your wish under a realistic light, it is the time to make a realistic plan, with small steps, that would get you closer to your goal.
Now that your plan is set, you need to start living ´as if.´How would you really feel if you were in posession of that wonderful home by the beach? Visualize, live there in your imagination, the more you use your visualisation trying to feel what your new life would look like, the more the attraction will be set in motion. Circumstances will miracoulosly start to fall into place so that you can carry out your plan, step by step.

Everything Coming Together

In spite of all the marketing behind The Secret,  Rhonda Byrne, its author,  made many people recognise that your mind is powerful, that you have stay positive if you want the things that you desire to come to you and to be hopeful and expectant, in other words, to have faith. It sounded very munch like pasages of the Bible like  ´Therefore I tell you, whatever you ask for in prayer, believe that you have received it, and it will be yours´  found in Mark 11:24.  This was a marvellous realisation for a lot of people who also appreciated the book even more for its continous references to the Bible.  I believe that the author made a great service to humanity by writing the book and explaining the Law in such a simple and approachable way. For some, that only book had the power to change many aspects of their lives for the better. For others, further reading on the subject was required and some went on to write about the subject. But I was aware that after a few years of ´the boom of the Secret´there remained a large part of the public that was left  as if  ´The Law´didn´t work for them even if they agreed with the principles. I was one of them.

A few years later I came acroos ´The Teachings of Abraham´by Esther and Jerry Hicks, a series of books that expalin in more detail ho the Law of Attracton works. At first I was a bit sckeptical about how they came to experience a higher being dictacting the material for their books through some sort of ´spirit posession.´However, I got to the point where I just forgot that part and focused only on the content because it happen to make a lot of sense.

My realisation with the Teachings of Abraham is that if you want to work in this world with ´The Law of Attraction´ it is necessary that you work with both the Law and CBT (Cognitive Behavioural Therapy) together. In this blog I inted to put both to work together.

The Boom of ´The Secret´

The Boom of ´The Secret´

When you practice CBT (Cognitive Behavioural Therapy)  on a regular basis you start seeing life under a different light. Problems become opportunities, you disccover the reality of your life situations under a new and more realistic perspective and you stop catastrophizing. It takes time to create new habits of thinking and so I would recommend this type of therapy only if your depression isn´t too strong, or to the point you can´t manage your thoughts. In that situation you have to work with other professionals.

As stated earlier, changes in your thinking habits don´t happen overnight. You have days where you feel better and days where you slip and go back to the point from where you started. It is a process and like all processes it takes time. Always be patient and gentle with yourself but don´t take the eye off the ball if your aim is to get better.

As I was getting better, I used to wander by myself around Waterstone´s, a well known book shop in London, and spend some of my time there.  I would go straight to the ´Self-help´´ or the ´Spirituality´section and get lost in many amazing books that later would become inseparable ´friends in print´for the rest of my life. In one of those occassions I came accross one of the week´s best selling books. It was called ´The Secret´ and as I flicked through the polished pages I remember ´La Magia´from Enrique Barrios, and could feel it was the same message. I bought the book and the video as well instantly. It was a relief to see that more and more people believed in what I believed. Perhaps now, I thought to myself, I was going to be able to see what I was doing wrong. But was I really pleased that it all had become such an instant marketing success? Deep down I was a bit skeptical of such a huge boom.

The Bubble Burst

I was living in London at the time when I fell pray to a horrible depression. I think I had carried with me a mild depression ever since I was little, but at that point it became serious. ´La Magia´or ´The Magic´ wasn´t working for me.Everything in my life was in disarray. It was then that I took the decision of going to the doctor. I was treated for depression, had counselling and was introduced to CBT or Cognitive Behavioral Therapy.

According to Wikipedia, Cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) is a common type of talk therapy (psychotherapy). You work with a mental health counselor (psychotherapist or therapist) in a structured way, attending a number of sessions. CBT helps you become aware of inaccurate or negative thinking so you can view challenging situations more clearly and respond to them in a more effective way.
CBT can be a very helpful tool in treating mental health disorders, such as depression, post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) or an eating disorder. But not everyone who benefits from CBT has a mental health condition. It can be an effective tool to help anyone learn how to better manage stressful life situations.

I became interested in the works of Dr Albert Ellis, pioneer on this technique and the works of his disciple Paul Hauck. For me it had a profound effect as it helped me decode the world in a different way. This new vision was down to earth, it  is proven to have helped many people and it is now a widespread therapy. It worked. However, deep inside of me I had this nagging voice telling me not to forget about ´The Magic.´
